Oula is seeking a Lead Midwife to help launch, steer, and scale our innovative maternity care practice in Charlotte, North Carolina. This role is ideal for a thoughtful, clinically excellent midwife who is deeply committed to patient-centered, judgment-free care and energized by building high-performing teams in a dynamic, startup environment. In this role, you will both shape and uphold Oula’s clinical model while providing full-scope midwifery care. You will balance hands-on clinical work with leadership, quality, and operational responsibilities, serving as a key connector between frontline care teams and organizational leadership.

This is a full-time position, with clinical (call coverage, prenatal care, gynecology) and administrative and leadership duties (people management, quality initiatives, meetings, and special projects) and requires assessment of priorities and flexibility to ensure all responsibilities are met.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Management

  • Lead, mentor, and support a team of midwives, fostering a culture of trust, accountability, collaboration, and professional growth
  • Host regular team meetings to build connection, alignment, and psychological safety; engage in clear, respectful, and direct communication, including difficult conversations when needed
    Serve as the primary point of contact for routine clinical and operational questions from staff midwives
  • Partner closely with Clinical Operations Managers, the Lead Midwife team, and partner closely with Lead Midwife team across markets.
  • Collaborate with People Operations to support staff satisfaction, retention, and engagement through bi-directional feedback systems
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, training, and ongoing development of exceptional midwives
  • Participate in and lead meetings related to Clinical Care, Clinical Operations, Quality & Safety, and Midwifery Leadership

Clinical Care & Quality

  • Provide full-scope, evidence-informed midwifery care, including gynecology, pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum care across outpatient, inpatient, and virtual settings
  • Demonstrate strong procedural skills and clinical judgment, particularly in:
    • In-hospital labor and birth, including support for physiologic birth
    • Prenatal and postpartum visits
    • Gynecologic care and procedures
    • Complex lab and sonography review
    • High-risk patient management and appropriate escalation
  • Collaborate closely with the Associate Medical Director, virtual care team, and hospital leadership to support patients requiring higher-acuity or additional medical care
  • Participate in regular chart audits and inpatient chart reviews (including C-sections) to uphold quality and safety standards
    Identify gaps in care, system issues, and potential safety or risk concerns and escalate appropriately
  • Contribute to the investigation and resolution of patient or staff complaints as assigned

Desired Experience & Qualifications

  • Active North Carolina licensure as a Licensed Midwife (LM) or eligibility for licensure prior to start
  • AMCB certification as a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM)
  • Five years minimum full-scope in hospital midwifery practice preferred
  • Prior leadership experience mentoring, precepting, and/or supervising midwives (or a strong desire to grow into this role); experience working with OB residents a plus
  • Experience caring for diverse patient populations with a wide range of needs
  • Strong professional reputation for exceptional, patient-centered care
  • Experience with telemedicine or virtual care delivery preferred
